The Book of Shadows
After leaving your book of Dark Spells unattended, shadowy creatures have escaped into the world, filling it with darkness and taking pages of your book with them.
Venture into the dungeon and battle darkness with light, recovering lost pages and thus new magic from the book. Be warned, use some of these spells sparingly, or you might get corrupted yourself.
Would love it if you gave my game a try :D at least until you see a couple cool spells/enemies since I spent a while coding them (especially big guy)
It is a top-down dungeon crawler pixel game.
Things to keep in mind:
- Missing from the tutorial, but you CAN reorder your spells on pause
Some hints/info if you wouldn't like to feel/figure it out as you play:
- Dash makes you invulnerable and deals a teeny bit of damage, (VISUAL TELL: Gray glint)
- Some of the cooler but darker spells can corrupt you (TELL: icon has a glint + world turns purple)
- Life is represented by light in this game. If you are weak / about to die, you will see less.
- There are two ways to die. If you are flashing red, you are low on health. If you are flashing purple, you have almost corrupted yourself by using too many dark spells.
- Difficulty increases as you get more spells.
Known bugs/issues:
- Mouse input buggy (web)
- Player speed is significantly faster on some devices (windows) could be frame-related but I used apply_force instead of apply_impulse so idk???
Moving forward:
- I know the spell wheel is not intuitive so I want to use a scroll wheel or mix it with more inputs. (It's kinda rewarding when you get it but don't think I didn't feel it too, I was just too rushed to experiment more than I did)
- I was gonna add more enemy variations but my genius decided making a terrible last minute drawing was a better idea. Thinking a slow, little intro version to the big guy, or some enemies with effects.
- My vision for the game was there would be waves/fights to get the spells, with the monsters drawn to the darkness, and they could also make for checkpoints as you explore.
- Naturally, difficulty needs to be adjusted. Some enemies are too fast, too heavy, or a bad balance of slow / hard hitting. Additionally, there shouldn't be many of the third, final enemy at once (hope you adjust to the controls to make it to that part)
If you find it too difficult / annoying to play these are the spells/enemies if you are curious because I know you are busy.
- Spells (by corruption)
- Arrow: Simple damage
- Fireball: Shoots in both directions, has piercing, and deals damage over time
- Explosion: High risk / reward, applies fire effect to all in an area
- Freeze blast: High risk / reward, freezes everything in the area so you can think
- Snowball: Shoots two in a cone, and freezes enemies on impact.
- Magnet: All enemies will run from you
- Sword: Invulnerability + summons two swords from the shadow realm to push enemies away
- Void: Swallows the closest, weak enemy into the shadow realm.
- Enemies (by health) :
- Little fast guy
- Heavy slow guy
- Big crawling guy (He's my favourite he gave some funny reactions to friends, he should spawn usually at 4-5 spells)
I hate to do it but I used public domain sounds, since I got rushed.
